Binding of gallates to the isoalloxazine ring in FADH₂ reduces the enzyme, xanthine oxidase. FADH₂ in the enzyme reduces oxygen to the flavin hydroperoxide and the hydroperoxide is smoothly reduced to hydrogen peroxide (A pathway).
