Proposed antioxidant action of pyridoxine in human erythrocytes. Pyridoxine acts by neutralizing free radicals to prevent the oxidation of proteins and phospholipids of the erythrocyte membrane. Pyridoxine, when converted to a free radical, could be regenerated with vitamin C or glutathione. X: proteins or phospholipids. X• and R•: free radical. GSH: reduced glutathione. GS-SG: oxidized glutathione. Px: pyridoxine. Px•: free radical of pyridoxine. Vit Cox: Oxidized vitamin C. Vit Cred: Reduced vitamin C.
