Ibtisam Al-Hashimi

Dr. Al-Hashimi graduated with B.D.S and Diploma in Oral Surgery from the University of Bagdad. She received a Master degree and Ph.D. from State University of New York at Buffalo. Currently, Dr. Al-Hashimi is a Professor at the Department of Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Al-Hashimi has published over 160 scientific publications and she is the founding of Salivary Dysfunction Clinic in Dallas. She is the recipient of 2009 Salivary Researcher of the year and she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Open Dentistry Journal.

Francesco Chiappelli

Professor (full, tenured) Francesco Chiappelli (UCLA bachelor's degree, 1975, neurobiology; UCLA master's degree, 1981, research methodology & biostatistics; UCLA Ph.D., 1986, counseling psychology; UCLA post-doc in psychoneuroimmunology and in NIAID clinical and fundamental immunology, 1987-1990) joined the faculty of the UCLA School of Dentistry in 1994. He has developed a nationally and international recognized research program in translational science in healthcare for the last 15 years, and teaches as well at the California State University, Northridge, and as a Conjoint Full Professor of innovation and research at Newcastle University, Australia. Prof. Chiappelli has over 200 peer-reviewed publications, not including book chapters and books in the field of evidence-based dentistry and related fields. In his field of comparative effectiveness research, Prof. Chiappelli collaborates extensively nationally in the US, as well as globally from Asia, to latin America, Africa and Australia.

Marco Cicciù is a University of Messina Assistant Professor who has covered topic like technology, biomaterials, bone regeneration, prosthodontics for publications on Journal Oral Implantology, Journal Craniofacial Surgery, International Journal Oral Maxillofacial Implants, Journal Maxillofacial Surgery, International Journal of Clinical Experimental Medicine. A Sicily native, Marco graduated on Dental Science from University of Catania discussing a thesis realized in cooperation with the Bioengineer Department about the masticatory load and stress distribution. Gianrico Spagnuolo (Biography
Gianrico Spagnuolo

Dr. Gianrico Spagnuolo received a D.D.S. degree at University of Naples “Federico II” in 1997. He completed his Ph.D. in Dental Materials Biotechnology in 2002 and earned a post-doctoral fellowship in 2002-2004. In 2003 he had been Visiting Assistant Professor at Department of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology at University of Regensburg (Germany) and from 2006 is Adjunct Scientist at same Dental School. From 2007 to 2008 he was associate researcher at Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Biomaterials (CRIB) - University of Naples “Federico II”. In 2011 he completed the three-year postgraduate program in Oral Surgery at the University of Naples “Federico II”.

He recently obtained the National Italian Qualification for Associate (2013) and Ordinary (2014) Professor. Moreover, he was Professor at Postgraduate program in Oral Surgery at same University (2015 and 2016).

To date Dr. Gianrico Spagnuolo is Assistant Professor in School of Dentistry at the University of Naples “Federico II” spending his time teaching, giving lectures and participating in the faculty practice.

Patrick R. Schmidlin

Dr. Schmidlin studied Dental Medicine at the University of Zurich where he got his degree in 1998 He specialized in the fields of Preventive Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry as well as in Periodontology. He is Head of the Division of Periodontology and Peri-implant Diseases at the Clinic of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology at the Centre of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich and an Honorary Professor at Department of Oral Sciences, University of Otago (NZ). His research and clinical interests include the prevention and non-/minimally invasive therapy of primary caries as well as non-surgical and regenerative periodontal therapy and implantology.

N. Gagliano

Prof. Nicoletta Gagliano graduated in Biological Sciences and obtained a PhD degree in Physiopathology of Aging at the University of Milan, Italy. She is an Associated Professor of Histology and the director of the Extracellular Matrix Lab at the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health of the University of Milan, Italy. She is a molecular biologist with high experience in cell cultures, gene and protein expression analysis, and morphologic methods. She has published more than 80 scientific publications.

The field of research is related to the study of the expression of genes and proteins involved in extracellular matrix remodeling and collagen turnover in different pathological conditions, such as fibrosis, gingival overgrowth, tumor invasion, and to the study of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition during the carcinogenesis process .

W. Shi (Biography
W. Shi

Dr. Wenyuan Shi is a chairman and professor of Oral Biology at UCLA Schools of Dentistry. Dr. Shi’s laboratory has been using multidisciplinary approaches to study oral microbial pathogenesis with a specific focus on microbial biofilm, inter-species interaction and signal transduction. In addition, Dr. Shi’s laboratory is actively involved in the development of next generation of diagnostic and therapeutic tools against oral microbial infections, including instant chairside detection of oral pathogens and peptide based targeted antimicrobial therapeutics. These translational research efforts have resulted in novel technologies that are licensed and developed by major pharmaceutical, dental and biotech companies. Dr. Shi is also the founding scientist and chief science officer of C3 Jian Inc. (

Dr. Shi obtained his BS degree from Fudan University (Shanghai) in 1984, acquired his Ph.D degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991 and fulfilled his postdoctoral training at University of California-Berkeley during 1992-1995. He is co-author and co-inventor of over 250 scientific articles and patents.

R. Dziak

Dr. Rosemary Dziak is a Professor of Oral Biology at the School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, State University of New York. She received a MS and a Ph.D. in Radiation Biology & Biophysics from the University of Rochester and engaged in postdoctoral training in pharmacology at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Dziak has over 100 scientific publications in the area of bone biology and tissue engineering and holds two US patents on bone regenerative products.
